Up and coming Irish singer/songwriter Susan O'Neill released her new single “Sign of the Times.” The track is the latest to release off her upcoming solo album Now in a Minute, due out September 13th via Star House Collective. With a mellow indie pulse that calls you back to a nineties hum, “Sign of the Times” features powerful poetic lyrics soaring along the top, taking us out of time and into the everyday confrontation of how the world spins us around. This feeling is exemplified in the accompanying music video shot by Susan while visiting New York City. Edited by Christopher Luke, it glimpses the bright lights and at times over-powering messaging constantly in sight throughout the city that never sleeps.
On the song, Susan said: “It sometimes feels that the world of media and marketing is too abrasive, it can be loud, confronting, false and unforgiving. It doesn’t ring true to me, yet somehow, it works on me. I’m the fool that digests the need for material things. I’m the person feeling inadequate against the distorted image of perfection that is portrayed to us as everyday reality. So clever are the slogans, colours & images combined to entice us into spending money we often don’t have on things we don’t need. This song, ‘Sign of the Times’ is about that. I suppose I sing about ‘all the people’ because we are all targeted. It is in reality about my own awareness of how far I will or will not let this marketing beast play a role in my life.”
“Sign of the Times” follows the release of “Bright Eyes” along with a stunning music video filmed in the wilds of County Clare on the west coast of Ireland and directed by Susan herself. The lead single “Drive” is also out now, which Hot Press Magazine described as “rife with poetic flow and rich, juxtaposing lyricism.”
Produced by Christian Best and mastered by Australian engineer Issac Barter, Now in a Minute was recorded over the past 18 months between Clare and Cork, with Wexford brothers Cillian and Lorcan Byrne and Killian Browne. The solo effort follows Susan’s 2021 collaboration album with Mick Flannery titled In The Game, which became the biggest independent selling album in Ireland that year. It also earned Susan nominations for the Choice Music Prize and the RTE Radio 1 Awards for “Best Folk Album of the Year,” “Best Female Folk Artist of the Year,” and winning “Best Original Song” two years in a row for “Baby Talk” followed by “Chain Reaction.” Susan’s debut solo EP Now You See It also won “Best Original Song” for the title track in 2023 at the Radio 1 Awards. As well as collaborating on many songs with all of the musicians on this new album, Now in a Minute also see’s Susan reunite with Mick Flannery on a selection of co-writes for this record.
“I’ve been tipping away at this thing behind the scenes,” stated Susan. “Now, it is an album and it’s finished. I’m very much looking forward to sharing it with you. I had a great pleasure sharing the process with these wonderful humans who helped me manifest these recordings.”
Susan has spent the last few years honing her craft as a solo performer. A songwriter of many depths, with a timeless voice that is equal parts balm and blowtorch, The Irish Times hailed her as “audacity personified, a free spirit; a real performer” while The Sunday Times simply called her “Exquisite." In the past two years, she has performed on stages across North America and Europe, opening shows for Valerie June, The Teskey Brothers, and Phoebe Bridgers who also took to her social media after hearing In The Game and raved “I Love this F***ing record” and went on to have the pair join her both in North America and the UK during her Punisher tour. Susan has also had numerous sold out headline tours across her native Ireland.
Following her special guest performance in front of thousands of Mick Flannery’s fans at last weekend's show at Cork’s Live At The Marquee (described by The Irish Examiner as “A thing of great beauty” in a live review of the show), Susan has just announced her biggest headline show in Cork city to date. She will perform with her full band at Live at St. Luke’s on October 12th with tickets on sale today. Already announced performances include an appearance at this year's Night and Day Festival, Galway Arts Festival, and All Together Now Festival as well as a full Irish headline tour in support of her new album this autumn.
